How to see which companies visit your site from AI
Most visits from AI assistants arrive without a label. Here is how visitor identification works, what you can see in the EU and the US, and how to tell which visits came from an AI answer.
The short answer
- Visitor identification matches a visit to a company, and in some places to a person.
- In the EU and UK, identifying a person without consent is hard to justify under GDPR. Company-level identification is the usual choice there.
- To know a visit came from AI, you need more than the referrer, which is often missing. Matching the landing page to the pages AI quotes helps.
- Send only warm companies to your CRM, with the reason they're warm.
Person-level or company-level?
Person-level identification names the individual who visited. It is common in the US, where privacy rules allow it with the right notice.
Company-level identification names the organisation instead. You lose the individual's name but get something most EU legal teams can approve.
How to tell a visit came from AI
Check the referrer first; when an assistant passes it, it's decisive. Check campaign tags. Then compare the landing page with the pages AI assistants quote for your category: an arrival on a quoted page is strong evidence the visit started with that answer.
Without these checks, most AI visits are filed as "Direct" in analytics.
What to send to your CRM
Send companies that show buying intent: return visits, pricing, demo or contact pages. Include the question they asked AI and the pages they read, so sales knows the context before the first call.
